Program Overview: This workshop will outline the Special Education process for children who have special needs and are in out of home placements. Participants in the workshop will gain an understanding of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) process and develop skills which will allow successful participation in the educational planning process. The workshop will include presentation and discussion of state and federal guidelines regarding special education services and strategies and techniques on being productive committee members in obtaining appropriate services for children in care.
Objectives of the Program: Participants will develop clarity around the components of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) process and develop skills which will allow successful participation in the educational planning process. Trainees will increase understanding from a provider perspective of rights as a participant and member of an IEP team.
About the Trainer: Derrick Gilchrist, Ed.S, has vast experience in collaborating with various community agencies and has amassed years of experience working with children who have emotional and behavioral disorders and children with autism.
Target Audience: Foster care parents, Adoption agency staff, Social workers, counselors, students, mental health workers, group home staff, and other professionals working with children and families.
